Frequently Asked Questions

Is homebirth safe?

Homebirth can be a safe option for healthy, low-risk pregnancies when you're cared for by a licensed, experienced midwife, with a good plan for hospital transfer if needed. It is not the right choice for every pregnancy, and the midwife's job is to help you understand both the benefits and the limits so you can make an informed decision.

What the research says:

Large studies from the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. have looked at outcomes for low-risk women who used midwives for their home births. Overall, these studies show:

What happens if there's an emergency?

While most homebirths unfold safely and normally, part of responsible midwifery care is being fully prepared for the unexpected. The midwife brings emergency equipment, medications, and the skills to use them so we can respond quickly and effectively if something strays outside the range of normal.

Emergency equipment includes:

The midwife maintains collaborative relationships with local hospitals and follows clear, well-defined transfer protocols. If medical intervention becomes the safer choice, the transition is smooth and prompt.

What is included in prenatal care?

Prenatal care with MotherBloom Midwifery is spacious, personal, and centered on you. Each visit gives time to check in, track your health, and build trust as we prepare for your birth together.

Your care includes:

Appointments are scheduled for 60 minutes, giving plenty of time for questions, discussion, and shared decision-making.

Do you support water birth?

Yes! MotherBloom Midwifery supports water birth, and many families find it to be a peaceful, comforting way to welcome their baby. Warm water can ease labor sensations, promote relaxation and mobility, and support a gentle, calm transition for your baby. The birth pool is included in the Complete Homebirth Package with no additional rental fee.

What is postpartum care like?

Postpartum care is gentle, supportive, and brought right to your home. The midwife stays closely connected with you in the early weeks as you recover and settle in with your baby.

Your care includes:

How can my partner be involved during homebirth?

Your partner's involvement is not only welcomed—it's encouraged. Homebirth creates a beautiful space for your partner to be fully present and actively engaged in one of the most meaningful moments of your life together.

Does insurance cover homebirth?

Some insurance plans do cover homebirth. MotherBloom Midwifery is not in network with any insurance companies, but uses a professional insurance biller who pursues reimbursement through your plan. The biller negotiates with insurance companies and helps clients obtain gap exceptions to cover midwifery services using in-network coverage rates.

If you don't have insurance, many families find that even when paying out of pocket, homebirth is more affordable than hospital birth.
